Job seekers sometimes have the misconception that the only way to land a job is to spend a bajillion hours on the computer sending out hundreds of applications on job boards.
I’m not saying you should ditch job boards all together, I’m just saying that there are faster and more proactive ways to complement your online search, so you don’t end up waiting.
Statistics show that 70-80% of jobs don’t get published, which means that only about 20-30% of jobs make it to online job boards. To to put this in more perspective, for every 100 job openings, only 20-30 will ever get posted online. And these are the few jobs hundreds of applicants like you are also competing for.
But you ask…where does 70-80% of jobs go then? Well, that my friend is the “hidden” job market.
These are jobs people get through connections within their network, these are also jobs that probably didn’t exist until the hiring manager was so impressed by the candidates profile, that he creates a position just for them. And I’ve seen this happen very often with some of my clients.
The Pareto principle, also known as the law of the vital few states that “80% of the effects comes from 20% of the causes”. In other words, 80% of your results stem from 20% of the things you do. You can also flip that to mean – 20% of the things you do, should produce 80% of your results. And this rule applies to everything else in life.
Your networking, your marketing and positioning strategies are areas which make up 20% of the things you should be doing to get 80% of your results. And this will help you land your dream job faster, without the frustration, rejection, demotivation and all the painful words that end with “tion”.
