Soft Skills Yay or Nay?

Heck yay!!!

You’ve probably heard me go on an on about the the skills you REALLY need to start your DREAM BA Career.

Communication – both written and verbal is one of the key ones.

There are quite a few other skills which we all have and use everyday like…

Organizational skills and critical thinking…

Being organized is a must for you as the BA, being the facilitator responsible for steering the business in the right direction.

Also making sure you’re able to keep to deadlines and hold others accountable especially if you’re assigned the role of a scrum master on an Agile project.

Empathy is also another one which some people overlook – and it doesn’t mean rolling over and accepting everything that gets thrown at you…

You’ll need to draw a fine line between what’s important that supports the business goals and objectives vs. what’s simply a nice-to-have feature, that can be thrown in if time and budget permits.

Critical thinking can’t be overrated, about 80% of your job as a business analyst involves thinking through ideas and concepts.

The most important thing is knowing how to leverage these skills and drawing from examples in your current or previous role to craft a market ready BA resume that will help you land your dream BA job even faster.

As always, cheers to your BA Career Success!

BA Meeting “go-no-go” Radar

It’s easy to get bogged down by the thought of meetings on meetings on meeting as a new BA.

Perhaps it’s because you think that’s what everyone expects you to do.

Meetings are an important part of your requirements elicitation and validation process, but they should be well thought out and planned in advance.

✅ Creating an agenda before and

✅ Circulating the meeting minutes after is always best practice.

However not all situations will always call for a meeting.

If in doubt, do a quick check and run your topic of discussion through a what I call a “meeting go-no-go radar” by asking yourself these 3 questions –

 1. What do I hope to get out of this meeting?

 2. Do I have a high-level understanding of the subject?

 3. Can I come up with a list of questions to ask or action items to move this conversation forward?

If you can’t clearly answer these 3 questions, then it means you still have some groundwork to do.

Perhaps an email to gather some additional information and ideas on your next steps might be all you need at that point.

As always, cheers to your BA Career Success!

What’s Your Growth Plan?

It’s important to check in with your goals from time to time and evaluate where you are; and get to work on them – if there are goals you haven’t accomplished yet.

Being clear on where you are vs. where you want to be in specific areas of your life – whether it’s your career, finances, relationships etc. takes a conscious and intentional effort, and that’s what ensures change and promotes growth.

Clarity helps you determine the objective – where you want to be, what that end result looks like.

Goals help you work out a plan to get there.

Dreams, imaginations and visualizations puts some character on those goals.

Don’t think of a goal as some monstrosity which takes years and years to accomplish – yes, some goals are that way.

But, you can start with something simple and fun like reading one book a month, or creating parts of your BA resume, learning a new skill, spending more time with your loved ones, or losing 2 pounds whatever it is; have a clear objective and make those small changes (disciplines) and keep at it.

Doing this puts YOU in control and if you can maintain the discipline and persistence required to accomplish one small goal, then you can do just about anything.

I’ll leave you with this quote by Seth Godin.

“Today, choices are everywhere. Which means that not only do we have to wrestle with insufficiency (of respect, of compensation, of reliable work) but we also have to take responsibility for our freedom…

The freedom to choose something better, and even more important, the freedom to do work that matters”

As always, cheers to your BA career success…

How to guarantee your BA career success before you even begin.

A lot of times we aspire to big dreams or ambitions in life and we make solemn vows to ourselves to accomplish them no matter what!.

Then life happens, we either get distracted or smacked in the face by difficult situations which leaves us second guessing ourselves.

Thinking…

“may be it wasn’t meant to be”, “if was really meant to be, it would have happened for me by now”

Just because you want something so badly doesn’t mean it will magically happen, there’s a part you need to play (a.k.a rolling up your sleeves and getting to work) to keep your dreams and aspirations in view.

Most importantly be sold on you and the fact that you are enough, know that you have what it takes to make it happen…

Also have the guts to try, try, try again even in the midst of obstacles…a failed BA interview, crickets after sending out resume after resume, being passed up for a promotion yet again…

As always, cheers to your BA Career Success!
