An interview is a very important step in your job application process and this an opportunity to make a strong impression on your dream employer.
Employers love to hire people they like, humans who are relatable and can fit well into their culture.
And that’s why it’s important to make the interview atmosphere feel relaxed and conversational.
Robotic one-word answers won’t cut it. Let your interviewer(s) feel at ease with you as you make eye contact.
Answer questions by giving as much relevant detail as possible while also tying your responses back to the job description.
Demonstrate your enthusiasm and interest in the role.
If you feel it’s the right fit for you, let your interviewer(s) know right way that this is an opportunity you’d like to pursue if they make you an offer.
Make sure you’re well prepared and here are some tips to get you started:
1) Research your interviewer(s) – I know this may sound obvious, but you’d be amazed at the number people who skip this step and they waltz into their interviews without knowing who the interviewer(s) are.
Check out their LinkedIn profiles to know their interests and things you may have in common and use this to your advantage.
2) Research the company – Get to know their latest news and initiatives, also ask questions about them. This also shows you did your homework.
3) Demonstrate your skills – Show off your knowledge and skills as they relate to the job.
Answer behavioral questions using the STAR method – Situation (the problem), Task (what you did), Action (your involvement and how you added value) and Result – the outcome.
Write out your answers to common interview questions like “tell me about your self” and get someone to practice with you.
4) Ask questions –  Have a list of 2-3 questions prepared beforehand to ask your interviewer(s) about the position or the organization. This shows you’re genuinely interested.
5) Follow up – Send personalized thank you emails or cards to each of your interviewer(s) within the first 12-24hrs following your interview. Ask if they’d like to connect with you on LinkedIn.
Also, check in with them one to two weeks after your interview to ask for an update.
Finally, don’t wait around for a response especially if you don’t hear anything for a few weeks.
Don’t take it personal, there could be other factors involved like project cancellations, which could mean that the position is no longer available, or the role could also be filled internally through mobility opportunities.
Move on and leverage your network or existing connections to get referrals so that you can land other interviews or job opportunities faster.
